FAQ

What Is An Oral And Maxillofacial Surgeon?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the dental specialties (along with orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, oral pathology and pediatric dentistry) recognized by the American Dental Society. It involves surgical treatment of diseases and problems involving the mouth, face, and jaws. Whereas an oral surgeon is most commonly known for the extraction of teeth and removal of wisdom teeth, an oral surgeon is also trained in the surgical treatment of fractures of the facial bones, diagnosis and treatment of various pathological conditions and surgical treatment of cysts and tumors of the jaws. An oral surgeon is also trained in reconstruction of the jaws involving bone grafts and dental implants as well as osteotomies to reposition an underdeveloped or malformed jaw. Extensive training is also obtained in various sedation techniques and general anesthesia.

Why Is A Consultation Necessary Before Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery?

A consultation allows the surgeon to fully evaluate the situation and what will be necessary to treat it. It allows the surgeon to accurately assess the patient’s health, to discuss possible surgical complications that may be anticipated, to inform the patient as to what can be expected post-operatively, to explain to the patient why the surgery is necessary or recommended how difficult or easy the surgery can be, and whether or not oral surgery is necessary. Any radiographs (x-rays) can be taken as well as determining what type of anesthesia will be necessary or requested. It allows us to inform the patient the costs of the procedure and if present, to more accurately submit the insurance claim. All consults with a minor or dependent MUST be accompanied by one of the parents or guardian.
